With the success of shows like The Walking Dead, non-superhero comics have grabbed the attention of fans and TV executives alike. While Southern Bastards and Outcast definitely show promise, there are still a number of comics out there that would be prime properties for TV deals.
- East of West. A sci-fi western from writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Nick Dragotta, East of West is a strange tale of hope in the most hopeless of times. This story is set in a dystopian United States on the verge of destruction, with Death and the other Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse as the unlikely heroes.
While the ongoing series already has five trades worth of source material ripe for live action entertainment, the chance it’ll ever be picked up for TV is unlikely. While the series’ sprawling landscape and epic nature would likely pose production problems, the hardest part may be finding kids to play three of the Horsemen.
- Invisible Republic. From husband and wife team Corinna Bechko and Gabriel Hardman, Invisible Republic follows fallen reporter Croger Babbs across the galaxy as he tries to uncover the truth about the fallen Mallory regime.
Grittier than most science fiction series, the muted pallet and worn textures could prove an interesting translation to the small screen, though the multiple timelines may be difficult to executive, given the need to create what’s essentially two different worlds, as well as numerous characters at different ages.
- The Violent. Written by Ed Brisson and illustrated by Adam Gorham, this series follows recovering addicts Mason and Becky through the streets of Vancouver as they sink to new lows of desperation to recover their daughter.
Though only a few issues in, The Violent has a cast of characters that could not only carry an AMC-style crime drama, but could make a high quality show on a budget well below that of the other two series on this list.
