The latest “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” trailer has finally dropped, giving a further glimpse into the second chapter of Marvel’s intergalactic, sci-fi, action, comedy blockbuster.
This trailer introduced characters and weaved new themes that set the tone for what may be a more serious, but still funny sequel. So lets look at three things we learned from the latest trailer, and uncover what questions these reveals raised.
What We Learned From Latest Trailer
- Daddy’s home.
- Cut from the original trailer aired on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the full version gives us our first live action look at Kurt Russell as Star-Lord’s father — Ego the Living Planet. Though Ego appears in human form, he’ll likely appear as an actual planet as well, creating an interesting scenario unlike anything we’ve seen on the big screen so far.
- Themes run deep. While the trailer was packed with the lighthearted jokes that the first movie was loved for, it also hinted at some deeper themes that weren’t touched on in previous trailers. While the appearance of Star-Lords absent dad is clearly an emotional point, it was Ayesha trying to sew dissention in the group with her speech about jealousy and betrayal that set the table for a darker tone.
- Nebula has a heart, maybe. In this trailer, we got to see more of how Nebula fits into the Guardians. Her best moment is when Drax takes a friendly jab at her about not being part of the family, and she gives a subtle smirk that lets us know she’s in on the joke. Now, there is a scene where it looks like she’s shooting at Gamora from a fighter jet so it’s likely she’ll take a turn for the worst. But if she does revert to her old ways before the movie ends, it looks like she’ll give us some heartwarming moments along the way that’ll make it even more emotional when she breaks bad.
