As if flooding our screens with subpar Star Wars movies and too many Marvel shows wasn’t enough, here comes Moana to further prove that Disney can be a shamelessly avaricious caretaker of its most valuable brands. The animated Moana, released a mere 10 years ago, was an irresistible, top-tier riff on the Disney princess archetype that tugged at the heart and delivered plenty of laughs. But success at Disney often means gilding the lily until the petals fall off, which, in Moana‘s case, meant a lackluster 2024 sequel and now an unnecessary live-action remake that manages to be exactly like — and yet markedly worse than — the beloved original.
