Scary Movie Sets Streaming Debut (Including an Extended Cut)

Earlier this year, the Scary Movie franchise returned in a big way 13 years after its last entry and a full 25 years after the Wayans brothers departed the film series. That return was an all-new Scary Movie, the sixth film in the franchise, operating as a spiritual sequel to the first two films as well as something of a reboot of the franchise. The film didn’t exactly wow critics but was a box office success as it poked fun at modern culture, popular movies, and more. Now, just a few months after it’s theatrical debut, the latest Scary Movie is finally getting a streaming debut — meaning that not only will more fans be able to enjoy the “rebootquel”, but they’ll get to properly binge the whole Scary Movie franchise in one place.

Paramount+ has announced that Scary Movie will arrive on the platform on September 3rd. The new film joins the first Scary Movie, Scary Movie 2, Scary Movie 3, Scary Movie 4, and Scary Movie 5 on the streamer, meaning you could have a whole marathon of the franchise all in one place. Making things perhaps even better, though, is that the newest Scary Movie isn’t coming alone to Paramount+. An extended cut of the film will also debut on the streamer on September 3rd.

With the commercial success of the latest Scary Movie film as well as the potential for the film to end up a streaming hit — it’s become increasingly common for films to find entirely new levels of success once they hit streaming — one of the big questions fans of the franchise have had is whether there will be a Scary Movie 7 headed to theaters anytime soon. As of the time of this writing, there has been no official announcement of a Scary Movie 7, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t ideas already floating. Marlon Wayans has previously teased ideas for future films that would give more recent horror hits like Backrooms and Obsession the Scary Movie parody treatment. Those films would certainly give the franchise plenty of material to work with as both were box office hits as well have become very much a part of current popular culture, so much so that Hollywood has taken notice and is leaning into that particular brand of horror for future films.

That said, even commercial success doesn’t always mean a sequel happens. There had already been a lengthy span of time between the most recent Scary Movie and its predecessor and it’s possible that the ending of the latest film feels satisfying enough for the powers that be to retire the franchise again. It is also possible that they’re waiting to see if the film has streaming legs before making any decisions as streaming success is becoming more and more an important metric for films as part of their overall picture of whether or not they did well enough for a sequel. At this point, it’s just a waiting game, but at least it’s one that can be played while binging Scary Movie, at least starting September 3rd.
