GTA 6 is set to bring a feature Grand Theft Auto fans have not seen since GTA 4. In other words, bring back a feature that was skipped by GTA 5 and GTA Online. We know this not because of official communication from Rockstar Games, but because of the ongoing leak saga. For those out of the loop, it appears someone has obtained a playable build of the upcoming Grand Theft Auto game, which has led to a metric ton of raw footage of the game leaking online, which in turn has revealed a metric ton of details that Rockstar Games was withholding. This includes major details, but also smaller ones.
Over on the GTA 6 Reddit page, one user notes that in the new leaked GTA 6 footage, it can be seen that the maximum wanted level in the game is six stars. As you may know, in the first-ever Grand Theft Auto game, long before it became a phenomenon, the maximum wanted level was ten stars. Grand Theft Auto II changed it to six stars, and every game after followed suit, including GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas, and GTA 4. Then, GTA 5 and GTA Online took the six-star maximum wanted level and lowered it down to five, a change many actually didn’t like at the time, but grew accustomed to. For some Grand Theft Auto fans, it is all they have ever known. It’s being changed back, though.
Not only are the six stars back, but there are other changes to what is now a pretty dated system in GTA 5. To this end, the leaks seem to reveal a new system that takes a lot of pointers from Red Dead Redemption 2. To this end, there are three red icons when wanted, which appear to be for whether or not the car is known, the clothes are known, and the face is known. This is similar to how Red Dead Redemption 2 did it. Meanwhile, it also appears the wanted system will see the cops more sweep a specific area rather than just aimlessly and randomly look for their target.
All of this is to say, the new wanted system is clearly going to be the most sophisticated wanted system the series has seen yet, and likely a GTA version of the wanted system in Red Dead Redemption 2. Whether it will be any good remains to be seen. It’s certainly harder to implement such a system in Grand Theft Auto compared to Red Dead Redemption because the sandbox is more dense and complicated, plus you can move around it far faster.
All of that said, take everything here with a grain of salt. This information, sourced by Reddit, is from unofficial leaked footage of the game, and a seemingly older build of the game at that. We could see more of it soon because the leaker behind this new leak has warned that more footage may drop soon.
