All thrillers demand some suspension of disbelief, but Verity requires more than most — and that’s both a point in the Colleen Hoover adaptation’s favor and one of its most frustrating qualities. Based on Hoover’s novel of the same name, Verity does everything an adaptation should. It hits the source material’s most important beats, makes changes that enhance the story, and pays attention to the details. Unfortunately, its fidelity works against it as much as it works for it. The film is effective as an adaptation, but looked at on its own, it highlights a harsh truth about the book: that it might be a bit too unhinged at times.
