“Ben Affleck the Director” and “Ben Affleck the Movie Star” are back. Though neither is at the peak of their powers in Animals, they deliver a perfectly adequate blend of throwback thriller and contemporary guilty pleasure that’s bound to be a Netflix chart-topper. Following Affleck and Matt Damon since the founding of their production company, Artists Equity, in 2022, it’s clear that Animals is the type of movie the two lifelong friends set out to make: the no-frills, mid-budget thriller focused on script, performances, and an insular human narrative. The problem with Animals is that it struggles to offer anything new.
