Tommy Dorfman’s feature debut, I Wish You All the Best, is a queer coming-of-age story that’s less about its central character discovering themselves and more about the people around them catching up and understanding them. It’s an assured reversal of expectations in audiences used to queer teen movies like But I’m a Cheerleader, Beautiful Thing, or even Call Me By Your Name, where young queer characters realize they have feelings for members of the same sex. In spirit, I Wish You All the Best follows in Love, Simon’s footsteps, centering a queer teen character navigating the pressures of coming out, but with much more dramatic tension. Here, main character Ben (Corey Fogelmanis) is a high-schooler who’s confident in their nonbinary identity and who they’re attracted to. It’s the world around them that needs to do the most growing up.
