Cathy Yan’s The Galleristis a chaotic chamber piece with no shortage of style, but like a piece of art that looks vivacious from afar but only grows confounding the more you stare at it, its colorful accouterments mask a shallow inner core. The director’s long-awaited follow-up to Birds of Prey boasts cinematography courtesy of Federico Cesca, whose camera sweeps the frame like a coked-up phantasm, and uniquely dialed-in performers who give into the inane melodrama of their affluent lives. Still, it’s all in service of a narrative that’s too content to preach rather than entertain. The best movies have some element of both, but this feels like a treatise masquerading as a movie.
