Ahsoka Season 2 Release & Whether Season 3 Will Happen Officially Addressed by Dave Filoni

It’s been a busy spring for Star Wars fans. Animated series Maul – Shadow Lord just wrapped up its critically acclaimed first season, and new movie The Mandalorian and Grogu is just a couple of weeks away from hitting theaters. The galaxy far, far away has plenty of more content planned for later this year as well, including the second season of the live-action TV show Star Wars: Ahsoka. It’s long been speculated that the series will return at some point in 2026, but no release date has been officially announced. Now, Lucasfilm co-president Dave Filoni has addressed the status of Ahsoka.

Speaking with Screen Rant on the red carpet for the Maul – Shadow Lord Season 1 finale, Filoni discussed Ahsoka. After confirming that he’s been working on “editing all the episodes at once,” he touched on a release window. “I’m not saying, but I might know,” he teased. “Everything needs its moment. Right now, this is Maul’s moment.”

Filoni also touched on whether or not Ahsoka will continue with a third season. “You never know. Everything works as planned, and I know where the story goes and where it should tie up. And so, I’m not really worried about that,” he said. “But fan speculation [about Ahsoka ending after Season 2] is always fun. It’s always fun to hear what people think. But we got a lot going on right now in the present. Like a Jedi, you must keep your mind in the here and now. We’ve got Maul, and we’ve got Mando happening, so it’s very exciting.”

Odds are, we’re going to have to wait a few months before Ahsoka Season 2 arrives. Filoni’s feeling that “everything needs its moment” is quite telling. Now that Shadow Lord Season 1 is complete, it’s about to be The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s moment. As the first new Star Wars movie in seven years, it’s going to be Lucasfilm’s top priority to give it a big push heading into opening weekend and throughout its theatrical run. The marketing campaign has been well underway for months, with the final trailer debuting at CinemaCon in April. The Mandalorian and Grogu is arguably the most important Star Wars project of this year, so it’s going to get Lucasfilm’s undivided attention for a stretch here.

Ahsoka Season 1 premiered in August 2023. It wouldn’t be a shock if Season 2 copied that playbook and debuted in August of this year. That way, The Mandalorian and Grogu would have most of the summer to itself, allowing Lucasfilm to keep its focus on the film during the first part of the season. Box office projections for Mandalorian and Grogu are low for a Star Wars film (but not catastrophic due to the cost-efficient budget), so it’ll need all the help it can get to make a splash with general viewers. By the time July rolls around, The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s box office story will have been written, so Lucasfilm could rev up the Ahsoka marketing machine then.

As for whether or not there will be a Season 3, it’ll be interesting to see what happens on that front. Feeling that “streaming is dead,” Disney appears to be shifting creative strategies, prioritizing theatrical features over new TV series. In the case of Lucasfilm, Ahsoka Season 2 is the last live-action show officially on deck. On the film front, Star Wars: Starfighter comes out next year, and there are plenty other movies in various stages of development. Streaming isn’t being completely abandoned, of course, but there’s no guarantee there will be an Ahsoka Season 3. That’ll be Disney’s call.

At one point, Ahsoka Season 2 was poised to just be one step on a much larger journey that would culminate in Filoni’s New Republic era movie (which essentially would have been Endgame for the MandoVerse storylines). However, things have changed a lot in the past few years; The Mandalorian Season 4 was scrapped in favor of this month’s movie, and there haven’t been many updates on Filoni’s film since it was originally announced. Now that he’s serving as Lucasfilm’s co-president, Filoni could be too busy with those responsibilities to direct a new film. Perhaps he reworked Ahsoka Season 2 to be the conclusion of the Grand Admiral Thrawn threat.
