Crunchyroll‘s Overgeared, the Fall 2026 replacement for Solo Leveling, surprisingly depicts the perfect emotional complexity of men in a single episode. Many anime based on Korean webtoons or featuring a protagonist who levels up are often dubbed the next Solo Leveling. This is especially true this year, as multiple anime have emerged that could fill the void left by its absence. It started with Tomb Raider King in Summer 2026, which was surprisingly similar to Solo Leveling. Now, in Fall 2026, two anime have emerged with similar elements. However, Overgeared, another adaptation of a Korean webtoon, serves as a sort of replacement for Solo Leveling.
But Overgeared doesn’t just incorporate the elements that make Solo Leveling such a cool anime. It adds its own nuances and, notably, takes a hilarious twist. The series features Grid, a protagonist desperate to level up in life, earn money, and provide for his loved ones. However, the difference is that Grid’s desperation is portrayed in a humorous way. In the fifth episode of Overgeared, the series takes a turn in Grid’s life. While it hilariously depicts how he now has a better life, there is also a hidden emotional complexity that men experience, which Grid’s situation perfectly highlights.
Ever since the first episode of the series, Grid has been portrayed as a protagonist deemed a failure and desperate to earn enough money to get by and contribute to his family. With the new opportunity presented to him, the last few episodes have seen him upgrade his crafting skills, and after securing a deal within the Satisfy game, he was finally able to generate enough money. By creating a legendary weapon, Grid managed to sell it for a price equivalent to 24.8 million yen in real life, finally giving him the confidence and relief he had been seeking. More importantly, however, is how his family reacts to his situation.
Until he brought in money, his family treated him as nothing more than a burden, with the episode hilariously depicting them as having only one child: Grid’s sister. As soon as Grid reveals that he has earned money and can contribute to paying off the family’s debt, with plans to clear it entirely in the future, he is suddenly considered an important member of the family. All of this is hilariously depicted, but on a deeper level, it highlights the reality of men, which has always remained the same regardless of class or country. The ability to provide for one’s loved ones has long been tied to the definition of being a man, and, albeit hilariously, Overgeared portrays this through Grid.
Grid has arguably become one of the most relatable protagonists, as his emotional displays and the desperation of a 25-year-old man trying to succeed in life feel incredibly realistic, especially for those in the same age group who fear what the future holds. The protagonist is honestly what makes Overgeared stand out, even as it is frequently referred to as Solo Leveling‘s replacement because of their shared elements. It is a different kind of Solo Leveling replacement on Crunchyroll, and its portrayal of men’s emotional complexity, though hilarious on the surface, is also poignant upon closer inspection.
