Prime Video’s adaptation of God of War had been making its way through production this year, but filming was halted after original Kratos actor Ryan Hurst suffered an injury. Rather than wait for the actor to recover, Prime Video decided to recast Kratos, recruiting Dave Bautista as Hurst’s replacement. Years before cameras started to roll on a live-action God of War project, Bautista was seen as an ideal choice for Kratos thanks to the combination of his physique and dramatic chops. With that in mind, it shouldn’t come as any surprise that fans are very much looking forward to seeing what Bautista can do with Kratos.
On our official X account, we posted a poll asking fans what they thought of Bautista’s casting in God of War. As of this writing, 605 votes have been cast, and only 9.4% of participants selected “Disappointed. Won’t watch.” Everyone else is happy about Bautista being attached:
Now that Dave Bautista is officially playing Kratos in the live-action God of War series, how do you feel about the casting?
God of War is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed video game franchises under PlayStation’s umbrella, but the conversation surrounding the upcoming TV adaptation hasn’t been entirely positive. Prime Video’s God of War series has been subject to backlash and controversy, beginning with the polarizing responses to the first official still image of Kratos and Atreus. More recently, Kratos game actor Christopher Judge had harsh words for Prime Video, wondering why the streamer wasn’t working with the talented writers and developers from the games, utilizing their experience and expertise to make the TV show as great as it can be. A high-profile project like God of War is going to be subject to scrutiny in this day and age, but God of War has really been under the microscope.
The decision to recast Hurst was controversial as well. Hurst put in a lot of time and effort to get into the proper shape to play Kratos, and he lost the role due to truly unfortunate circumstances. The actor tore his biceps, and while he had surgery to repair the injury, the recovery can take several months, meaning it’d be a long time before Hurst was ready to resume filming. In the interest of keeping God of War largely on track and minimizing delays (production is said to pick back up in October, and episodes with Hurst will be reshot), Prime Video opted to recast Kratos. It makes logical sense, but there’s a human element here that’s difficult to ignore. Even some people excited to see Bautista might have been interested in seeing what Hurst could have done.
The sample size of our poll is small, but it’s still an encouraging sign that fans are still looking forward to the project. It’s a testament not just to the God of War source material but also Bautista as an actor. Since his big acting breakthrough as Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy, Bautista has cemented himself as one of the best wrestlers turned actors, displaying impeccable range in a variety of projects. He’s constantly looking for roles to challenge himself as a performer, utilizing much more than just his brawn and comedic timing. Kratos is going to be a very dramatic role that will require a lot out of Bautista. What happened with Hurst is heartbreaking, but Bautista coming in as the new Kratos makes it go down a bit smoother for fans.
Ideally, the Bautista casting will serve as a bit of a reset for Prime Video’s God of War. The show can disappear from the spotlight for a bit, and then when we get our first look at Bautista as Kratos, the conversation will be reignited and hopefully take on a much more positive tone. A God of War TV series, one that’s aiming to expand the scope and narrative of the games, has a lot of potential to be a captivating fantasy series. It’d be great if it was riding waves of positive momentum heading into its premiere.
