'In the Blink of an Eye' Review: Three Interconnected Stories, One Bad Film

In the Blink of an Eyeis what happens when a film foregrounds its themes to the exclusion of its story and its characters. The movie spans millennia as it builds towards a Very Important Point, and all considerations of effective storytelling are secondary. The big idea — which will come as no surprise to anyone who suffered through Paulo Coelho’s 1988 novel The Alchemist, loved Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life, or cried during the trailer for 2012’s Cloud Atlas — is that everything is connected.
