It’s difficult to watch Rust without constantly thinking about the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Her loss is immeasurable and hopefully a reckoning point for industry safety standards. I am overjoyed to report that Hutchins’ work, and that of Bianca Cline, who completed the film when it resumed shooting, is nothing short of extraordinary. Rust is a brilliantly realized Western with epic vistas, complex characters, and a thoughtful discourse on human nature. Heroes and villains are painted in shades of gray, where those who profess fealty to the almighty have less of a conscience than a supposedly cold-blooded killer.
