Send Help is billed as Evil Dead director Sam Raimi’s return to horror, but while the film throws plenty of blood around, in its bones, his first R-rated movie in over 25 years is actually a gleeful skewering of the male ego and a twisted take on female agency. In fact, the ever-resourceful script by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift is such an enjoyable mind game of criss-crossing motives and shifting allegiances that Raimi’s signature visual tricks — including a jump scare involving a corpse — often feel like he’s imposing his style on a film that doesn’t need it.
