Although it’s been a few months since The Mandalorian and Grogu hit theaters, Star Wars fans are still wondering where this story will go next. There was chatter, even from Din Djarin actor Brendan Wayne, that a sequel movie was likely, although The Mandalorian season 4 hasn’t been counted out either. However, just based on the fairly poor performance of The Mandalorian & Grogu at the box office, both are feeling like major question marks. In fact, with so few Star Wars movies and shows currently confirmed to be in active development (really only Ahsoka season 2, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord season 2, and Star Wars: Starfighter), it’s seeming less and less likely that Disney will want to take another gamble on this property anytime soon.
That doesn’t mean that Din Djarin and Grogu as characters are absent from the franchise’s future, though. In fact, hitting Disney+ in just over a week, on Sept. 2, Disney is releasing LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian. The new limited series, as the title suggests, will be a LEGO version of the story, akin to other projects like LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy. Already, the trailer for LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian has revealed that this new series will be continuing the years-long tradition of Star Wars poking fun at itself through non-canon LEGO stories. Despite the satirical nature of the series, though, the project will see the return of some very familiar faces—or, rather, voices—including a star who was surprisingly absent in The Mandalorian and Grogu.
According to reports, although several major characters, such as Din Djarin, will be voiced by different actors for LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian, Cobb Vanth actor Timothy Olyphant will be returning as his Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett character for the series. Vanth, who was revealed to be wearing Boba Fett’s iconic Mandalorian armor in The Mandalorian, is the marshal of Mos Pelgo and a beloved Star Wars character, and many had been expecting him to play some sort of role in The Mandalorian and Grogu, especially because of his prominence in The Mandalorian. However, the movie ended up being fairly insular, with Din Djarin and Grogu’s adventure being limited primarily to their encounters with Rotta the Hutt, the Hutt Twins, and Colonel Ward.
While it therefore made sense narratively, it was still disappointing not to see Olyphant make his big screen debut as Cobb Vanth for the movie. Nevertheless, while the future of the live-action show and/or the possibility of a sequel movie remain anyone’s guess for now, it is exciting to know that Vanth will be back and Olyphant will be voicing him. He also won’t be alone. Reportedly, several other original stars from the show will be voicing their characters for LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian, including Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano, Giancarlo Esposito as Moff Gideon, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Carson Teva, Temuera Morrison as Boba Fett, Amy Sedaris as Peli Motto, and Katee Sackhoff as Bo-Katan Kryze.
Clearly, LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian will be star-studded, and for now, it is the closest we will get to The Mandalorian season 4 or The Mandalorian and Grogu 2.
