The exciting Summer 2026 anime season is finally here, along with the latest new series and sequels. Most of the new series have yet to make their debut, but as always, they will be streaming on Crunchyroll. As the largest anime streaming hub for fans, Crunchyroll will be adding dozens of series to its library and streaming new episodes weekly after the Japanese broadcast. This also includes Red River, one of the most anticipated anime debuts of the year. The Summer 2026 anime schedule was updated on the official website of Crunchyroll, confirming that the anime will premiere on July 7th, 2026. It will be available for viewers in North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, CIS, and the Indian Subcontinent.
Although the streaming time and the English dub release date haven’t been confirmed yet, we can expect an update shortly before the premiere. Red River is based on a classic Shojo manga, written and illustrated by Chie Shinohara. The manga was serialized in Shogakukan’s Sho-Comi magazine from 1995 to 2002, and even received the 46th Shogakukan Manga Award in the Shoujo category in 2000. Unfortunately, despite its interesting plot, it never got the global recognition it deserved for three decades. However, considering the exciting anime debut, the anime revival is guaranteed to popularize this incredible series.
The story centers around Yuri Suzuki, an ordinary girl who has just passed her college entrance exam and shared her first kiss with her boyfriend. However, just when she is about to begin a new chapter of her life, she is forced into another timeline and awakens in the 14th-century BC Hittite Empire. Waking up in an unknown world without anyone by her side, she eventually gets entangled in the fight for the throne.
Along the way, Yuri encounters the mysterious Prince Kyle, the most likely candidate to succeed to the throne. Following the unexpected encounter, she begins her journey, capturing the hearts of the people and finding a place in the new world.
The anime is being produced by the animation studio VAP under the banner of Tatsunoko Production, one of the oldest animation studios of all time. The studio is best known for acclaimed classics such as Ping Pong the Animation, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and more.
For several decades, the anime and manga industry has been heavily dominated by the Shonen demographic, particularly battle action series. Most of the best-selling manga of all time also belong to that demographic, including One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, and many more. On the other hand, while most Shojo anime and manga often fall behind in global recognition, they always offer unique stories for the audience.
The 1990s wasn’t only a phenomenal decade for Shonen, but Shojo series thrived during that era, releasing some of the most incredible classics that are appreciated to this day. Unfortunately, despite receiving critical acclaim and having a wide fan base, many beloved series never received an anime adaptation or received the global recognition they deserve.
Animation studios are finally realizing the potential of such forgotten classics, and with the hype Red River has received so far, it might even open the door to future Shojo adaptations.
