Lanterns is bringing renewed attention to the Green Lantern space of the DC Universe, but it’s not the first time DC has attempted to bring the Green Lantern Corps to the screen. While the Ryan Reynolds-led Green Lantern film is the most well-known adaptation, there have been several other attempts to adapt the property. Now we have our first look at a fan-favorite Lantern from an unmade project, and it has one key thing in common with the DCU version.
Concept artist and creature designer Constantine Sekeris, who has worked on standout projects like House of the Dragon and Guardians of the Galaxy 3, recently posted some concept work he did for a previously unmade Green Lantern project, and the character featured in that work is none other than the lovable powerhouse known as Kilowog. One look makes it clear this is Kilowog, though this is a younger version of the character. You can see the design for yourself in the artwork below.
Sekeris didn’t reveal any other details on the Green Lantern series this was for or what timeframe it was in development, but he did share that this was for a younger Kilowog, writing that “he was introduced younger in age and a bit softer but still very much his original design from the comics.” Speaking of that costume design, the other element Sekeris highlighted was that, like Lanterns, this costume was going to be a practical suit, so it wouldn’t have been CGI.
Now, whether that means it was going to be a physical suit he wore in the actual show or a construct isn’t known, but Lanterns chose to go with the former, as Hal reveals in the first episode that he only brings out the suit for special occasions. We also see an earlier version of the suit during his 60 Minutes interview at the very beginning.
As for Kilowog, the suit has some changes from the standard Green Lantern uniform, but it still looks unquestionably Green Lantern thanks to the color scheme and Lantern symbol front and center. The white accents in the suit are subtle, but if you look closely, you can see them break up the green and black main color scheme.
The collar portion of the suit comes down a bit further than you might expect, but depending on the artist, this is pretty accurate to the comics as well, as some artists really emphasize how big his neck is, which pushes the suit’s neckline down even further. The other constant is Kilowog’s trademark pink skin, which is well accounted for here as well.
Perhaps one day we’ll learn where this version of Kilowog was meant to appear, but for now, fans can tune into Lanterns every Sunday on HBO.
