Kingdom Hearts is now in the works on an official anime series coming to Disney+, and the creator behind it all has revealed the first details about what to expect from this new entry in a much wider franchise. Kingdom Hearts is preparing for a whole new era of its run with Disney as they are planning to expand its influence out with even more projects. This includes a new anime series, and that’s something that the franchise has been trying to get off the ground for decades at this point but never quite was able to do.
Rumors of a potential Kingdom Hearts anime have been around for a few years, and it was finally confirmed to be in the works as a new anime series was officially announced as part of the D23 event earlier this month. Kingdom Hearts franchise creator Tetsuya Nomura opened up about the new series following its announcement with fans on social media, and confirmed the first few details about this project. It’s going to be telling a brand new story.
“We can’t discuss all the details just yet, but I’ve been in close discussions with the scenario team, including myself, and when needed, we’ve also enlisted the art team’s cooperation, even creating multiple new character designs specifically for this project,” Nomura revealed in a statement. “I can’t say anything more right now, but the hint is in the single piece of key art that’s been revealed. Please let your imaginations run wild while you await further updates.” But notably this new art is a big tease about what’s next.
Other details confirmed for the new Kingdom Hearts anime is the fact that the series will be a new adventure set in the wider franchise world. Nomura is working closely with the team behind the new series including the designs of its new characters as mentioned in his statement, and it’s going to be a joint production between Disney Kids & Family and Square Enix. Scheduled for a future release with Disney+, there’s unfortunately been no release window or date set for the new project as of this time.
Kingdom Hearts fans have been hoping for it to get an anime series pretty much as soon as it began. Thanks to its blend of Square Enix and Disney franchises it seemed a perfect fit for an animated take, but one has never really gotten off the ground. We’ve seen the franchise’s story expanded upon with official manga and light novel releases, but an anime would really be the final frontier. Now that Disney is open to anime projects like this and has found success with other franchises like Star Wars, it seems all the stars have properly aligned for it all at last.
Kingdom Hearts 4 is currently scheduled for a release in late 2027, and that could be around the time we get to see this new anime series in action too. But it’s more likely that this series is scheduled for a release sometime in 2028 and beyond given that it seems very early into its production. But we’ll just have to see how much Disney and otherwise makes its way into this new anime.
